How to Measure Awareness Content Performance

Awareness content is the first stage of your marketing funnel, the content designed to create awareness and attract attention. You know, the kind of content you post on social media, LinkedIn, YouTube, or maybe a Blog post intended to be found in search engine results.

You can’t expect to improve your marketing results without measuring performance…for example how people see it, read it, and most importantly how many people click through to the next layer of content, where you start selling.

In this post, I’ll break down Awareness content, the metrics you should be tracking, and how to optimise for better results.

What is Awareness Content?

Awareness content, also known as Top of Funnel (TOFU) content is created to introduce your product of service to a new audience. It’s designed to build awareness, spark interest, and begin the process of nurturing prospects into potential customers. Think of TOFU as awareness content, or a signpost to direct traffic towards an in-depth piece of content.

four examples of awareness content

Popular Examples of Awareness Content

  1. Organic Social Media Posts: Informative or thought-provoking content on LinkedIn, Instagram, or Twitter designed to engage followers and extend reach through shares, comments, and reposts..
  2. Outreach via Email or LinkedIn DM: Personalised messages designed to introduce your business to prospects and establish a connection.
  3. Videos: Educational or engaging content distributed on platforms like YouTube or social platforms, offering insights or thought leadership.
  4. Paid Ads: Campaigns on Google, LinkedIn, or Meta that promote service pages, blog posts, resources, or videos to a carefully targeted audience.
  5. Blogs and Articles: Search engine-optimised content answering common questions or addressing pain points in your industry.

Remember…the main goal of TOFU content is not to sell, but to attract attention and encourage prospects to move onto the next stage of your marketing funnel, where you build trust prior to pitching a product or service.

Key Metrics for Measuring Performance

TOFU content is most effectively measured by tracking metrics in three key areas:

  1. Reach: Are You Reaching the Right Audience?
  2. Engagement: Are People Interacting with Your Content?
  3. Action: Are You Driving Traffic to the Next Stage?

1. Reach: Are You Reaching the Right Audience?

Reach is the foundation of TOFU performance, so measuring how many people see your content. You will probably be familiar with terms Impressions or Reach, depending on what platform you use to publish your content. They are basically telling you how many people have seen your content in their feed or search results.

Organic Posts

For organic content, reach has two key determining factors; the size of your audience and the level of engagement it receives. If you have 1,000 followers on LinkedIn your typical post will reach 5-10% of your network, so 50-100 impressions. If a large proportion of your audience engage with your content it can trigger the algorithm to expand the impressions.

💡Metrics to Track:

  • Impressions: Total number of times your content is displayed in your network’s feed.
  • Engagement: The number of clicks, likes, shares, reposts, comments.

📝 Pro Tip: No doubt you’re shocked by how few people see your content, right? That’s why it’s critical to be strategic when posting on social. Focus on building a network of your ‘ideal customers’, produce content that speaks directly to your customer’s pain points, and post consistently at least once per week. Theoretically speaking you’ll need 10-20 posts to reach your entire audience.

Paid Ads

Reach is influenced by your ad spend and targeting quality. When you set up a campaign your budget, Ad relevance, and audience profile will determine the reach. Your Ad creative and hook (headline copy) are the critical components to encourage people to click on the ad and read more. This will reduce your Cost per Click (CPC) allowing your budget to fund more impressions.

💡Metrics to Track:

  • Reach: The number of unique users who see your Ads prior to your budget running out.
  • CPM: Cost per thousand Ad impressions.
  • CTR: Click through rate indicates the percentage of people that click to see more of your Ad.

📝 Pro Tip: Poor CTR means your advert design or headline isn’t motivating your audience to click on the Ad to read more information about your product or service. Experiment with alternative graphics and Ad copy. High CPM indicates that the ad’s relevance to the audience is suboptimal, so also consider reviewing the quality of your audience criteria.

Email Marketing

The success of email marketing starts with ensuring your emails actually reach your intended audience. This isn’t just about hitting “send”—it’s about deliverability, list quality, and making sure your emails land in inboxes rather than spam folders.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Delivery Rate: Measures the percentage of emails successfully delivered to recipients’ inboxes. A high delivery rate suggests a well-maintained email list and strong sender reputation.
  • List Growth Rate: Tracks how fast your email list is expanding. If your list isn’t growing, your lead generation efforts might need improvement.

📝 Pro Tip: Regularly clean your email list by removing inactive subscribers and bounced email addresses. Use double opt-in confirmations to ensure your contacts are engaged and genuinely interested in your content. If you’re seeing a high number of undelivered emails, check whether your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records are correctly set up to improve deliverability.

2. Engagement: Are People Interacting with Your Content?

Engagement measures how effectively your content captures interest. While reach tells you how many people saw your content, engagement reveals whether they found it interesting enough to interact with.

Organic Posts

The strength of engagement on organic content determines how widely it is distributed by platform algorithms. Posts that receive more likes, shares, and comments are typically shown to a larger audience, increasing overall reach.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Engagement Rate: The percentage of people who interacted with your content after seeing it.
  • Reactions, Comments & Shares: Indicators of how much your content resonates with your audience.

📝 Pro Tip: Posts that invite conversation tend to perform best. Ask a thought-provoking question, encourage debate, or share a bold opinion to prompt engagement.

Paid Ads

With paid ads, engagement is useful but not the primary objective. While reactions and comments can increase credibility, click-through rate (CTR) is the most important engagement metric—it directly impacts how many people take action.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • CTR (Click-Through Rate): The percentage of people who clicked on your ad after seeing it.
  • Ad Engagement Rate: A secondary metric showing likes, shares, and comments.

📝 Pro Tip: If CTR is low, your headline, ad creative, or audience targeting might be misaligned. Test variations of each element to see what improves performance.

Email Marketing

Getting an email into an inbox is one thing, but getting recipients to engage with it is another challenge. Engagement is what moves email from a passive touchpoint to an active driver of clicks, traffic, and conversions.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Click-to-Open Rate (CTOR): Measures the percentage of people who clicked on a link after opening your email. A high CTOR suggests that your content and CTA are compelling enough to encourage action.
  • Conversion Rate: Tracks how many email recipients completed a desired action, such as signing up for a webinar, downloading a resource, or booking a call.

📝 Pro Tip: Test and optimise your subject lines, CTA placement, and email design to improve engagement. If people are opening but not clicking, your CTA may not be clear or relevant enough. If click-to-open rates are low, your email content might not be aligned with the subject line’s promise. A/B testing different subject lines and email layouts can help identify what resonates best with your audience.

3. Action: Are You Driving Traffic to the Next Stage?

Ultimately, the goal of TOFU content is to move prospects deeper into your funnel. That means driving clicks to your middle-of-funnel (MOFU) content, such as a landing page, lead magnet, or gated resource.

Organic Posts

Organic posts should always include a compelling CTA encouraging users to take the next step.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Outbound Clicks: The number of users who clicked a link to an external website (e.g., a landing page).
  • Traffic Source Analysis: Use Google Analytics 4 (GA-4) to track referral traffic from social media posts.

📝 Pro Tip: If clicks are low, rework your CTA placement and messaging. A CTA buried at the bottom of a post may be missed—place it earlier or reinforce it visually.

Paid Ads

For paid content, CTR and landing page visits are the key indicators of success. Your ad should not only attract clicks but also send traffic to a highly relevant MOFU page.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Landing Page Visits: The number of users arriving at your page from an ad.
  • Cost Per Click (CPC): How much you pay for each click.
  • Cost Per Lead (CPL): The cost of acquiring a lead through paid ads.

📝 Pro Tip: If landing page visits are low, revisit your ad copy and targeting. If visits are high but conversions are low, your landing page might need improvement.

Email Marketing

While email engagement tells you how well recipients interact with content inside the email, the true success of awareness-stage emails lies in whether they drive traffic further into the funnel. If subscribers aren’t clicking through to your MOFU content, your emails aren’t fulfilling their purpose.

💡 Metrics to Track:

  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): Measures the percentage of recipients who clicked a CTA inside the email, leading them to a MOFU asset (e.g., landing page, webinar signup).
  • UTM-Tracked Conversions: Use Google Analytics (GA-4) UTM tracking to see if email-driven traffic is converting into sign-ups or downloads.

📝 Pro Tip: If CTR is low, test different CTA placements (e.g., within the first paragraph vs. at the end of the email). If people are clicking but not converting, review your landing page—does it align with the email message? Make sure the offer and CTA directly address the reader’s pain points to improve conversion rates.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Focusing on Vanity Metrics
    • High impressions or likes don’t always mean your content is effective. Instead, focus on CTR and clicks to MOFU assets, which indicate real engagement and action.
  2. Neglecting the Audience Journey
    • Every TOFU post should guide the audience toward the next step. Posts without a clear CTA are missed opportunities.
  3. Failure to Test and Refine
    • A/B test different headlines, visuals, and CTAs to identify what works best. Small tweaks can lead to big performance improvements.

Conclusion: The Metrics That Matter

Measuring TOFU content performance isn’t about tracking surface-level metrics like impressions or engagement alone. The true indicators of success are:

Reach Are you getting your content in front of the right audience?
CTR & Engagement Are people interacting and clicking through?
Clicks to MOFU Assets Are users taking the next step in the funnel?

With the right data, strategic improvements, and continuous optimisation, TOFU content becomes a powerful driver of leads and conversions.

Final Thought: Track, analyse, and refine your TOFU content should constantly evolve based on what the data tells you.
