Content Marketing That Will Attract Your Ideal Customer

Content marketing is often misunderstood as just a way to generate clicks or views. In reality, it’s a strategic process designed to guide your audience from awareness to conversion.

Think of awareness content as your first impression, designed to captivate your ideal customer by addressing their challenges and aspirations.

But here’s the irony, ‘awareness’ content needs to do more than just raise awareness…It must trigger the reader to act and move on to the next stage of the buying journey. That’s why we refer to it as ‘Top of Funnel’ content as its sole purpose is to funnel traffic towards making a purchase decision towards the ‘Bottom of Funnel’.

With that being said, let me explain a few simple and actionable steps that you can follow to create awareness content that’s attention grabbing, and pulls prospects into your marketing funnel.

Step 1: Identify Your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)

Before you create anything, it’s a good idea to build a profile of the people you’re looking to reach. For SMEs serving B2B marketing I would recommend creating an Ideal Customer Profile based on firmographics, demographics and psychographic data points. In simple terms….

  • Firmographics: Profile the industry you are targeting, geographic location, the number of employees, or if there’s a certain revenue or private enquiry funding threshold your looking for.
  • Demographics: Then identify the key purchasing decision makers and influencers by job title. Maybe its the CEO or perhaps the HR Manager. Gender and age are not so relevant in B2B, however the number years of experience or the length time in a position might a consideration.
  • Psychographics: What is the company culture or buying behaviour. How does their purchasing process look like is it localised or maybe through a central office with a formal tender process. What are there goals…are they motivated by KPI’s, workflow efficiencies, or product that support scalability.
  • Pain Points: Finally be clear about what problems they have and how they’re aligned to the solutions your businesses can deliver.

📝Pro Tip: Create a detailed ICP document. Include firmographic details such as company size, number of employees, identify the stakeholders, map their purchasing process, common objections, and how they’re most likely to consume their content (e.g., videos, reports, webinars). This ensures every piece of content, and its distribution will align with your target audience.

Step 2: Create Content To Address Pain Points

Newsflash…Your audience is unlikely to be looking for the products or services you offer; they’re more likely looking for solutions to pain points or problems they’re experiencing.

So, producing content that promotes your latest ‘ERP Software’ is unlikely to trigger a meaningful response. Sure there may be a few cases where you just happen to hit someone with a service offer just when they are about to start researching that specific solution…but it a low probability.

Instead create content that shouts about solving a problem, by demonstrating a tangible outcome. Or aim to position your business as an industry expert, by producing content that shows a solution based approach.

Content example

Here’s a few different types of content ideas that we like to use in our agency to grab B2B prospects attention:

Educational Content

💡Example: “How to Cut Your Compliance Costs by 30% in 6 Months”

Why it works: Solves a clear problem with actionable advice and a strong promise with a tangible outcome.

Thought Leadership

💡Example: “The Future of AI in Manufacturing: Trends to Watch in 2025”

Why it works: Establishes your credibility and foresight, demonstrating an in-depth level of industry knowledge.

Story-Driven Content

💡Example: “How [Company Name] Reduced My Downtime by 50% with [Solution]”

Why it works: People love a good transformation story. This would make a great customer success story.

Cheat Sheets and Tools

💡Example: “Download Our Free ROI Calculator for To See How Much You Could Save”

Why it works: Offers immediate, practical value.

Industry Reports or Data

💡Example: “2025 UK SME Trends: Insights from 1,000 Business Leaders”

Why it works: Exclusive data builds authority and earns trust. Everyone loves to compare their performance against their peers.

Step 3: Use Hooks and CTAs to Engage and Drive Action

Awareness content needs a compelling hook to trigger your audience to open it or read it. Once you have their attention you need to obviously back it up with insightful high value content. But one of the biggest mistakes most B2B marketers make is in the transition phase. This is when you move the reader further into the marketing funnel by displaying a clear and obvious ‘next step’ or call to action (CTA) to move your audience to the next stage of your sales process.

Strong Hooks:

  • Start with a bold statistic: “67% of SMEs are not ESG compliant, how to avoid being one of them.
  • Ask a provocative question: “Are your employees unhappy and looking for alternative work? 10 Giveaway Signs to Look Out For.”

Effective CTAs:

Here’s a few call to action statements to borrow, each of them promise additional value:

  • 💡“Download our free guide for step-by-step strategies.”
  • 💡“Watch our 5-minute video for actionable insights.”
  • 💡“Sign up for our webinar to learn more.”

Step 4: Thinking Beyond the Awareness Stage

Remember, awareness content isn’t the end goal. Every piece of content that you publish should aim to move your audience closer to becoming a customer. So, here’s a really simple funnel to help you visualise how each stage flows into the next:
